A volunteering campaign for Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio.
About This Campaign
Silver and Marco applied to the Habitat homeownership program after a long road of unsuccessful attempts to purchase a home on the open market through conventional means. The couple was initially approved by a bank for a very small home loan. Unfortunately, the amount of the loan was not enough to allow even the purchase of a simple, safe, and decent home. They then tried to use the loan to buy a small home through a government housing program. In the end, issues between the government program and the bank resulted in the loan not being approved. Discouraged and somewhat skeptical, the couple decided to reach out to Habitat at the urging of Silver’s mother who had seen a Habitat billboard in her town. After learning more about the program, the couple applied and was accepted in early 2017. Silver, Marco, and their daughter, Stella, currently live in the first floor apartment of a two story home. There are some minor structural problems, including a front porch entryway that has rotten boards preventing them from using it. They are only able to install one lightbulb at a time in their bathroom vanity because using more causes the fuse to blow. The home has only two bedrooms and no yard. Although this is not a critical problem, the couple is hoping to expand their family and have a place they can enjoy as their own for years to come.
a bright future
Over the months they have been involved in the Habitat program, Silver and Marco have worked together to complete numerous hours of sweat equity on worksites, at ReStore, and in House2Home education classes. In fact, Silver has faithfully invested so many hours at ReStore that the store staff considers her an important member of their team. On top of sweat equity, both Silver and Marco work hard at their places of employment to provide financially for their family. Soon, all their hard work will pay off and their family will have a safe, decent, affordable home of their own! When asked what they look forward to most, the couple responded, “Having something to call our own – a place to have family visit and to raise our kids!”
