About This Campaign

family and current housing
Empowerment is one of the bedrocks of the Habitat housing ministry, and nothing brings greater joy than watching a partner family rise above their past circumstances to achieve their goals. Roughly eight years ago, Pat and her daughter, La'Bria, were in need of emergency shelter and were housed through the YMCA's New Beginnings program. As Pat got back on her feet, she was able to graduate from YMCA emergency housing to housing through Stark Metropolitan Housing Authority (SMHA). For the past seven years, Pat and La'Bria have lived in an SMHA 6-unit multiplex in Canton. The apartment is not well insulated and air leaks around the doors and windows. There are several places where the floorboards have grown weak and have developed small holes. Pat also struggles with mold and mildew issues throughout the home, and she has called the police several times because of neighborhood crime. Although she's thankful to have had a place to call home for the past seven years, Pat is ready to take the next step and own her own home. Having more space and a safe environment will allow Pat to host family gatherings with La'Bria, her two adult daughters Ta'Shia and La'Deja, and her five grandchildren.

a bright future
Patricia has faced some financial setbacks during her time in the Habitat program, but none of those have stopped her from pursuing her dream of homeownership. Pat has been a hard-working blessing on worksites, at ReStore, and in House2Home education classes where she has invested numerous hours of sweat equity towards the purchase of her future home. In addition to completing the weekly Habitat sweat equity hours and raising her daughter, Pat has worked in the childcare field for over ten years to provide financially for her family. Although sometimes doing all this can seem like a lot, Patricia is committed to making a short term sacrifice for the long term benefit of purchasing her own safe, decent, affordable place to call home. "I look forward to having peace of mind, meeting new neighbors, and the joy of having it be my own," Patricia said. "It will make a huge difference. Me and my daughter are so excited!"
