family and current housing
After years of living in various rentals, Habitat Partner Family Aletha Denny is ready for a home that she can call her own. Several years ago, Aletha was living alone in a private rental through assistance from a Section 8 voucher. Things changed roughly three years ago when Aletha not only received a pay increase at her job but also was granted custody of her granddaughter, Nasirra. Because of these changes, Aletha moved out of that rental and into her current residence with additional space for raising Nasirra. She also assumed the financial responsibility of paying the full monthly rent because she no longer qualified for Section 8 assistance. Upon moving in, Aletha discovered that the home was infested with roaches which she has unsuccessfully tried to get rid of, much to her growing frustration. In addition, several window screens and the storm door are damaged by holes and falling out of the frame. The back door to the home does not shut or seal properly, and the wood paneled walls in the living room are warped and completely pulling away from the wall in several places. When it rains, water pools at the bottom of the narrow, steep porch steps, possibly the result of damaged downspouts. Mostly, Aletha is tired of requesting her landlord come and fix the same maintenance problems time and time again. By purchasing a new home of her own, Aletha will provide security and stability for herself and her granddaughter. Aletha is very proud of fifteen year old Nasirra who loves to skate and run track and field through school.

a bright future
Throughout her time in the Habitat program, Aletha will invest numerous hours preparing to make her dream of homeownership a reality. She will soon complete the ten week House2Home education series where she will learn valuable skills regarding homeownership, maintenance, and personal and financial wellness. She has also invested hours of sweat equity on worksites and at Habitat ReStore, and Aletha is especially excited to help with the construction on her own future home. Although it sometimes seems overwhelming to balance raising Nasirra, working fulltime in the health services field, and completing the Habitat program, Aletha is committed to making a short term sacrifice for the long term benefit of owning a home. “Building is one of the things I am looking forward to most,” Aletha said. “It will make such a big difference and I am so excited to be able to call my home my own.”
