family and current housing
Ian and Valerie Gonzalez long for the day they become homeowners and provide their children with a safe, decent, affordable place to call home. The Gonzalez family is currently living in the first-floor unit of a house that has been converted into three separate apartments. Overall, the home is not in terrible shape structurally, but there are some concerns. The windows throughout are old and have minor leaks, so there is frequently a light film of black mold on the windows and casings. There was previously a leak in the upstairs unit that left water damage on their bathroom ceiling and currently their bathroom plumbing leaks into the shared basement space. The house is heated by electric baseboards that do not provide adequate heating, so they use plastic on the windows and space heaters. Some shifting of the home’s foundation has resulted in a slight slope in the hallway and kitchen floors. The front stoop is pulling away from house. While considering their options, Ian and Valerie spoke to their bank about getting a home loan, but were not approved. Then, a friend of the family, who was currently building a house with Habitat, suggested they apply for the program. Ian and Valerie took her advice and are now well on their way to providing a new home for their children in Minerva. Nine year old Alexis is the oldest of the Gonzalez kids. Alexis is an intelligent, hardworking little girl who is in the gifted program at school. Middle child Alyson is a social butterfly who loves to sing and dance. Both Alexis and Alyson take dance classes and are on the competition team. Zachariah, the youngest child, is an energetic little boy who is always climbing, flipping, or swinging on something. The family enjoys being together and are very involved with the children’s dance studio and playing softball.

a bright future
Throughout their time in the partnership, Ian and Valerie will invest numerous hours of sweat equity on Habitat worksites and at ReStore. They will also complete the ten week House2Home education classes to prepare for the responsibility of owning their own home. They especially look forward to the days spent building their future home alongside volunteers. Ian and Valerie have proven their dedication to achieving their goal of homeownership as they balance raising their children, working to provide financially, and completing the Habitat program requirements. Soon, all Ian and Valerie’s hard work will pay off and the Gonzalez family will have a safe, decent, affordable home of their own! “Owning our own home will make it more personal,” the couple said. “To be able to customize it to our liking will make it our home. Having a home instead of just another rental will provide stability for our children that we never had growing up.”
