family and current housing
Habitat is excited to partner with Nicole McLeod and her family to help them achieve their goal of homeownership. After years of moving between private rentals and government housing, Nicole is ready to purchase a simple, decent, affordable home of her own. Currently, The McLeod family is living in a rental home originally build by the ABCD Homes program. Although the home is newer and in decent shape structurally, Nicole has dealt with issues because of the location of the home. Situated directly between the SARTA bus garage and the YMCA temporary housing shelter, the neighborhood has much foot traffic. In fact, Nicole cited numerous times strangers have been in her yard, vandalized the home, thrown bricks through the windows, knocked on the doors, and peered in the windows. She hopes to purchase a home in a safer neighborhood and with a yard where her two boys, Nisuan and Carter, can safely play. Past credit issues led to Nicole not initially qualifying for the Habitat program. However, she worked hard, qualified upon reapplying, and is well on her way to achieving her dream of homeownership.

a bright future
Throughout her timein the Habitat program, Nicole will invest numerous hours of sweat equity on Habitat worksites and at ReStore. She also completed the ten week House2Home education series learning valuable skills regarding homeownership, maintenance, and personal and financial wellness. In addition to completing the Habitat requirements and raising her boys, Nicole works fulltime for a local insurance company in the accounting department. Although she is balancing many things right now, Nicole is committed to making a short term sacrifice for the long term benefit of owning a home. “I heard stories about Habitat’s program and wanted to be part of the experience,” Nicole explained. “I look forward to making the house my own. It will help us feel comfortable and take a little weight off my shoulders!”
