Family and Current Housing
Thomas and Heidi Sturgill are raising three children, Jaden (14), Jaxson (10), and McKenzie (8), while both parents work full time. Thomas, a Massillon native, has worked as a shipping coordinator at Galion-Godwin Truck Body for more than seven years. Heidi has worked in housekeeping at the Inn at University Village for the past two years.
About a year ago, after issues with a previous landlord, the Sturgills moved into a three-bedroom trailer, the least expensive option they could find that fit their family. It hasn't been safe or stable. The doors don't work properly, water damage has affected parts of the home, and keeping it warm is a challenge. Space is tight, with Jaden and McKenzie sharing a bedroom as the kids grow.
Like many families, the Sturgills have faced credit challenges that made traditional homeownership feel out of reach. They keep up with rent, show up to work, and advocate for repairs, but rental problems often go unresolved while costs keep rising.
Outside of work, the kids stay busy. Jaden loves reading and crafts, Jaxson is happiest on the move, biking and playing games, and McKenzie brings creativity to everything from coloring to caring for cats. As a family, they enjoy the outdoors together, taking trips, hiking, swimming, and camping when they can.
A Bright Future
The Sturgills first heard about Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio through a fellow homeowner, and that simple conversation opened a new possibility. They're working toward affordable homeownership and a home where repairs aren't a constant worry, doors lock the way they should, and the kids can each have a stable space to grow.
For Thomas and Heidi, this opportunity isn't just about moving; it's about finally putting down roots. They dream of creating bedrooms their kids can be proud of, decorating a space that feels like theirs, and building a future shaped by stability instead of uncertainty.
With Habitat for Humanity, the Sturgills are ready to partner, put in the work, and step into what's next. And we can't wait to see their story continue.
