FAMILY AND CURRENT HOUSING

Like so many of the people in our program, future homeowner Stacie Breinig is driven by a strong desire to provide a safe, decent, and affordable place for her family to live and grow. A Massillon, Ohio native, Stacie came to Habitat seeking an opportunity for homeownership that would meet the needs of her family, specifically those of her son Nathan. Eighteen year old Nathan is wheelchair-bound as a result of having Spina Bifida and finding a handicap accessible rental has been a challenge for Stacie. For several years, Stacie and her sons did live in a rental property, until the landlord decided to sell the home. They were unable to find a rental that met their needs. Instead, Stacie moved her family into her parents’ farmhouse in Massillon. Although she is grateful to her parents for opening their home, the two story house is not ideal as it is difficult to move Nathan between floors and has become a crowded space for all who live there.

A PERFECT FIT

Now that Stacie has selected a lot in North Lawrence, her dream of having a safe place to care for her children is becoming a reality. Not only will both of her sons benefit from the stability of having a permanent home, Nathan will have a handicap accessible home that suits his needs and encourages him to become more independent. Stacie describes Nathan and Nicholas as kind, loving, hardworking young men that live life to the fullest despite the challenges they face as a family. Together, the family enjoys going to the zoo, parks, and overall just spending quality time together. Although participating in the Habitat program is a big commitment, Stacie has enjoyed forming new friendships and learning the skills necessary to be a successful homeowner. In addition to raising her sons and fulfilling her Habitat sweat equity requirements each week, Stacie has worked as a clinical assistant at OMNI Orthopaedics in Canton for the past nine years. Her hard work and determination will soon pay off, and Stacie couldn’t be more excited and grateful. “I want to thank everyone,” Stacie said, “this opportunity is going to have the biggest impact on my family and my children!”

As a grassroots Christian housing ministry serving Stark, Carroll, Tuscarawas, Harrison, and Jefferson Counties, Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio is driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live. People partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage.
