Family and Current Housing
Danielle Chrisman and her adult children have rented a two-bedroom townhouse for six years and are ready to have a place they can call their own. Their Uhrichsville townhouse was intended to be a temporary living situation for the family, but it has become long-term. The biggest problem it poses is lack of space. Because it has only two bedrooms, Danielle has been sleeping on the couch. She’s excited to have her own room – and a bed – in her new Habitat home. The family’s current rental also causes some challenges for Danielle’s younger daughter Devon, who was born with a chromosome abnormality that has affected her physical health and resulted in developmental delays. She is often unstable on her feet and struggles with stairs, and in the rental, both the bathroom and bedrooms are on the second story. Danielle is looking forward to seeing the hard work she’s putting into the Habitat partnership help her reach her goal of having a space that better meets her family’s needs. Her son, Drake, describes his mom as a hardworking, helpful person who always thinks about others and never puts herself first. “She’d definitely give up a lot more for us than most people probably would,” he said.

A Bright Future
Since joining the Habitat partnership, Danielle has volunteered at the ReStore and gotten to help tar the basement of another family’s home. She said completing her sweat equity will help her appreciate her own home more, as she’s doing a lot more than just paying a mortgage. “God has blessed us and has enabled us to be able to participate in this,” Danielle said. Once their new home is finished, the family will have the outdoor space to be able to entertain friends, sit in the backyard, and have a cookout. Devon hopes to get a dog and put up a swing. Danielle pictures mowing her grass and planting flowers – just being able to take care of her own home.
