Family and Current Housing
Brandi Chipman knows what it’s like to not have a place to call home. About a decade ago, Brandi was homeless while pregnant with her daughter, Olivia. She moved into government housing after Olivia was born and has lived there ever since. In the past 10 years, Brandi has experienced an environment that isn’t the best for her children, both in terms of the activity around the apartment and the structural issues inside. Space in the family’s apartment is limited, and Brandi has had to deal with slow repairs – at the start of the pandemic, she spent nearly six months without a stove because no one would come fix it after it broke. Brandi’s current housing also has created a strain on her relationship with her parents. While she’s done her best to set up a decent home for her children, her family is hesitant to visit because they’re fearful of the neighborhood. Brandi had her application filled out for Habitat and then waited a long time before she sent it in. Despite pressure from her family to leave public housing apartment, she wanted to stay until she felt sure she was ready for the next step, just because it was so nice having somewhere to live.
A Bright Future
Joining the Habitat partnership and putting in sweat equity hours has been a growing experience for Brandi. She’s learned more about herself and more about where her money is going. She knows her Habitat home will help her family keep growing. For her son, Jalen, who is autistic, their new home will mean having the space to create a therapy area for him with activities that will help him grow. Olivia wants to join band next year, and she finally will have her own bedroom where she can practice her instrument. Brandi is looking forward to the small things her new home will provide, like being able to keep an egg carton with starter seeds outside without worrying it will be knocked over. She can’t wait to have a garden and paint and take on projects. “It feels fantastic,” Brandi said. “I definitely feel proud of myself in a lot of ways.”

In Support of Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio
As a grassroots Christian housing ministry serving Stark, Carroll, Tuscarawas, Harrison, and Jefferson Counties, Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio is driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live. People partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering, or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability, and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves.
