Family and Current Housing
Bre’Onna Armstead can’t wait to give her kids their forever home. After starting off at an income-based apartment, Bre’Onna and her children moved into a private rental house where the landlord is slow to make repairs. Bre’Onna has taken it upon herself to make fixes, such as painting and replacing a cracked countertop. There also are issues with crime in the neighborhood and Bre’Onna has had things stolen from her yard. She grew tired of putting her money into a house that she didn’t see her family living in for a long time, so she reached out to Habitat. On her third try, she was accepted to the program. Bre’Onna is excited for her children to grow up in a better environment than where they live now – one where she feels they can go outside and play safely. She’s looking forward to finally making her family’s house feel like a home, by planting a garden and decorating her kids’ bedrooms. She also knows the home will help her financially, as she will be putting her income toward property that’s her own and that will remain in her family for generations.

A Bright Future
Since joining the Habitat partnership, Bre’Onna has enjoyed learning how to fix her future Habitat home through her homeowner maintenance education classes. When Bre’Onna recommends Habitat to others, she always reminds them it’s not a free gift – you have to put in the time, and you have to save money. But if you are willing to work hard, she said, you can’t get a better deal anywhere else. Her children still are young, but Bre’Onna hopes that from watching her complete the Habitat partnership they learn independence and see that if she can do it, so can they. She believes eventually, her home will belong to her children and grandchildren. If they see how she takes care of it, she said, then when she’s gone, they’ll be able to pick up where she left off and keep her home in the family. Bre’Onna is so thankful to everyone who will be a part of helping her family build their Habitat home –and their legacy. “We’re really grateful and blessed to be able to get this opportunity and have people like them in our lives,” she said.
