Family and Current Housing
Megan Lancaster and her children have spent a long time living in rental properties or staying with other people. She can’t wait to give her family something to call their own. For the past two years, the Lancaster family has lived in a rental property that has major structural problems that have been slow to be resolved. The foundation of the rental property is not secure, which has caused the floors on one side of the family’s house to slant and the doors to not open and close properly. The upstairs bathroom has an occasional leak that has caused the ceiling tiles in the kitchen to not only stain but crumble – the issue has been so consistent that Megan’s landlord gave her a box of tiles so she can replace them as needed. The property also invites mice, and Megan has had to pay twice to bring an exterminator out to handle the pests. Aside from the issues inside, the neighborhood surrounding the family’s rental property also poses concerns. The worst part about where they live, Megan says, is hearing gunshots from down the street. Because of the environment, Megan worries about her children’s safety and won’t let them go outside without her.
A Bright Future
Since joining the Habitat partnership, Megan has taken education classes to prepare to be a first-time homeowner, including those about budgeting and caring for her new home. When she’s not completing her sweat equity hours at Habitat, Megan works at KeyBank. She also works hard raising her children, Antonio, who plays basketball for McKinley High School, and her identical twins, Olivia and Ava Lee. The twins were born with sickle cell anemia and require special care, such as daily medication and monitoring of symptoms, along with routine doctor’s appointments to make sure they stay healthy and pain-free. After so many years of renting, Megan is looking forward to having a safe, affordable home where her family can enjoy their favorite things together – having game nights, watching movies, and going for walks. “Knowing that I helped build my home and giving my kids some stability will be a great peace of mind,” Megan said.

In Support of Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio
As a grassroots Christian housing ministry serving Stark, Carroll, Tuscarawas, Harrison, and Jefferson Counties, Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio is driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live. People partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering, or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability, and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves.
