Family and Current Housing
Terry has spent the past 20 years living with her father and caring for him as he ages. Now that other family members are able to step in to help, Terry is excited to finally have the opportunity to purchase a home she can call her own. Currently Terry, her sister and their father live in a house in Canton that has several structural problems. The upstairs room Terry used to use as her bedroom is too damaged to be livable – the roof of the home leaked so badly that it caused the ceiling in the bedroom to collapse, and the electric wiring in the room is faulty. Instead, she now sleeps in a room on the first floor that is technically a storage closet and doesn’t have space
for her to store her clothing. In addition to the home being overcrowded and the roof needing replaced, there also is a leak in the upstairs bathroom that drips down into the kitchen. Though Terry has worked as an administrative assistant for the Workforce Initiative Assocation for the past 33 years, she is hesitant to invest her income in making major fixes to her father’s house, since she does not own it and is not sure what will happen to the property as her father gets older. After years of toying with the idea of owning her own home – and hearing her coworkers and friends talk about Habitat’s housing program – Terry decided to apply.

A Bright Future
Since joining the Habitat partnership, Terry has taken classes to prepare her for the responsibility of becoming a first-time homeowner, including courses teaching home maintenance and lawn care, financial literacy, and personal development. Once she purchases her Habitat home, Terry is looking forward to having a place for her close-knit family to gather – she has a daughter and grandchild that she loves spending time with. Her new home also will finally give her the feeling of privacy and freedom she’s been looking for. “I’m most excited about owning a home,” she said. “Just having something that I can say is mine.”

In Support of Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio
As a grassroots Christian housing ministry serving Stark, Carroll, Tuscarawas, Harrison, and Jefferson Counties, Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio is driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live. People partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering, or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability, and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves.
