FAMILY AND CURRENT HOUSING

Aquinda Hill wasted no time applying for the homeownership program when a staff member at her children’s school informed her of an opportunity to partner with Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio to build a home of her own in Sherrodsville. Aquinda grew up a short drive from Sherrodsville in the small town of Uhrichsville in Tuscarawas County. She dreamed of owning her own home in this area of the state and having a safe, decent, and affordable place to raise her children. For several years, Aquinda and her family lived in a private rental home that eventually ceased to be an affordable option. To save on monthly expenses, Aquinda and her two children moved into her parent’s home where the three of them share one bedroom.

Although living with her parents over the past year has been a financial blessing, Aquinda has worked hard to improve her credit standing and feels ready to accept the responsibility of owning her own home. Faith and Aden, Aquinda’s kids, are also ready to have a place to call their own and more space in which to live and grow. The Hill family enjoys spending time
together swimming, going on walks, and visiting parks in their area. Aquinda is so proud of her children and describes them as funny, unique, and full of life.

LOOKING AHEAD

Aquinda only recently joined the Habitat partnership but is already showing her commitment to the program. She has begun to accumulate the required hours of sweat equity at ReStore and on other worksites and soon will complete the House-2-Home education series to prepare for the transition to homeowner. In addition to the hours Aquinda invests in Habitat, she also works full time as an assistant manager at Burger King where she’s been employed for the past five years. Soon, all of Aquinda’s hard work will pay off and her dream of homeownership will become reality. When asked what she most looks forward to, Aquinda responded “It will be a big life change. My kids and I will own the home and no one can take that away from us.”
