Family and Current Housing
The O’Quinn family lives in Canton where Tina is currently raising her 5 children in a public housing duplex for the last thirteen years. Unfortunately, their living situation presents several challenges. Tina sleeps in the living room so her five children can split the three bedrooms in the duplex. There are water issues in the house such as the sink leaks which makes it inoperable. In addition to that, there’s has been sewer backup in the basement which causes mold. There are water spots on the ceiling in the living room from the leaks and evidence of roof damage as there are leaks in the upstairs bathroom from the ceiling. Outside of the structural issues, Tina’s most concerned about the location of her current rental. She is in a high crime area where her front door has been kicked in, and her car has been shot at, and stray bullets have come into her house four times. She will not allow her children to sit next to windows in her current rental due to the surrounding gun violence. Despite these challenges, the single mother is actively pursuing a stable housing situation through their involvement in the Habitat homeownership program. By participating in mandatory homebuyer educational classes, such as those covering financial wellness and home maintenance, Tina is arming herself with essential knowledge for her journey towards homeownership. She has also contributed sweat equity hours at the Habitat ReStore and worksites as part of their commitment to the program.
A Bright Future
While not involved in sweat equity at Habitat, Tina works as a warehouse scanner for a local company, specifically handling high-value products. She believes that this fresh start will bring immense happiness to her large family and provide them with a space to create lasting memories. Tina aspires to buy a home where her children can play outside and experience healthy growth in a supportive environment.

In Support of Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio
As a grassroots Christian housing ministry serving Stark, Carroll, Tuscarawas, Harrison, and Jefferson Counties, Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio is driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live. People partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering, or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability, and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves.
