Family and Current Housing
Residing in Canton, Ohio, Mariah faces the challenge of high rental costs. Consequently, the Frederick family is currently sharing a bedroom in Mariah’s sister’s home. Despite the challenges in the overcrowded home, Mariah is excited about the opportunity to provide a stable home life for her daughter. Alessia, who has spina bifida, requires catheter replacement every three hours and uses leg bracing since she currently lacks feeling in her feet. While the hope is for Alessia to gain independence, the current home, with steps, poses challenges. Mariah desires a single-story home where Alessia can grow independently. Learning about Habitat from a colleague came at a crucial time, given Alessia’s needs and the unaffordable rental market. This spring, Mariah will participate in homebuyer educational classes with other future homeowners, covering financial wellness, home maintenance, and essential topics to prepare for homeownership. Mariah, always wearing a smile, looks forward to the Habitat homeownership experience.
A Bright Future
Mariah works as the Lead Teacher for 12–22-month-olds at The Artful Family Enrichment Preschool, where she has been employed for four years. Alessia attends the daycare at the preschool, allowing Mariah quick access as they navigate Alessia’s disability. Outside of work, Mariah enjoys spending time with her large extended family. Alessia’s favorites include the movies Tangled and Bluey, as well as dancing and playing peek-a-boo. Mariah aims to foster joy and positivity in Alessia, recognizing that a clean, inviting, and safe home is the foundation for their family’s future.

In Support of Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio
As a grassroots Christian housing ministry serving Stark, Carroll, Tuscarawas, Harrison, and Jefferson Counties, Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio is driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live. People partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering, or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability, and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves.
