Family and Current Housing
Adam and Elaina currently reside in western Stark County, having both been born and raised in Massillon, Ohio. They are enthusiastic about the prospect of raising their family in the same community. However, their current rental residence poses numerous structural challenges that have prompted their pursuit of homeownership. In their current living space, which they’ve called home for a few years, several issues require attention. The windows are broken and boarded up, leading to air leaks throughout the house. The floors exhibit noticeable slopes, and the kitchen tiles frequently come loose. Compounding the problems, the kitchen ceiling sags, displaying visible leaks. The upstairs bathroom’s shower is unusable, posing a significant challenge for their 6-person family. Adding to the discomfort, the thermostat and multiple outlets are malfunctioning. The basement is plagued by mold, and there are missing drainpipes on the exterior of the house. Despite these challenges, Adam and Elaina have taken proactive steps to improve their situation by joining the Habitat homeownership program. They have engaged in a series of required homebuyer educational classes. These classes cover vital topics such as financial wellness and home maintenance, equipping them with essential knowledge for their journey towards homeownership. Additionally, they have contributed sweat equity hours by assisting other Habitat partner families in constructing their homes.
A Bright Future
Adam is employed at Shearer’s Foods, where he has been working for five years, while Elaina takes on the crucial role of caring for their children. As a family, they find joy in watching movies and passionately supporting the Massillon Tigers and Ohio State Buckeyes football teams. Unfortunately, escalating rent costs have constrained their ability to engage in activities like trips to the zoo and other family outings. The Burgess family eagerly anticipates the opportunity to travel more once they acquire their Habitat house. Reflecting on his own childhood experiences, Adam emphasized the importance of providing a better life for his children, driven by memories of growing up in a house lacking heat and other essential needs. This aspiration for a brighter future fuels their determination to achieve homeownership through the Habitat program.
