Family and Current Housing
Brittany, from Canton, Ohio, knows firsthand the challenges of housing instability. Growing up with her single mother after they lost their family home, she experienced life in public housing and now finds herself in a private rental where she spends more than 30% of her income on rent. Although she aspires to own a home, financial hurdles have limited her choices, keeping her in her current residence due to the lack of affordable alternatives. Her rental, intended for a single family, comes with its own set of problems. The heating system struggles against air leaks that chill the indoor air, and the kitchen—a converted back porch—doesn’t retain heat like the rest of the house. The aging electrical system can’t handle the stove and microwave running at the same time without blowing a fuse, and signs of water damage from the bathroom above raise concerns about the home’s overall structural integrity. And the attic is unusable, blocked off due to building code violations.Yet, Brittany remains determined. She is actively engaged in the Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio homeownership program, where she’s not just dreaming about a stable, secure home but also working toward it. By participating in essential homebuyer education classes, she is building her knowledge in financial planning and home maintenance, skills that will empowerher as she navigates her path towards owning a home.

A Bright Future
Brittany, who works as an early childhood educator at the JRC Learning Center, finds great joy in her daily interactions with children. Outside of work, she loves to cook and enjoys experimenting with new recipes. Her family treasures their time together, whether they’re cooling off with a swim or exploring new places on road trips. Her eldest, Jaydien, is passionate about Xbox games, Savannah is endlessly curious about the world around her, and young Jordan, just beginning to speak, is navigating challenges with cataracts and undergoing evaluations for autism and ADHD.Brittany’s goal through the Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio program is to provide a stable and secure home for her family, eliminating the constant concern over housing. She believes that securing a safe living environment will not only benefit her own children but also enhance her ability to support and teach the children at her daycare who face similar challenges of instability.
