Family and Current Housing
Marcos and Soralis, originally from Puerto Rico, have resided in Canton, Ohio, for the past seven years, living in public housing. Unfortunately, their current residence presents several challenges. There are noticeable signs of water damage beneath the bathroom and above the kitchen, with a sloped floor under the toilet posing a safety risk. Additionally, they frequently encounter sink backups and pipe leaks, causing damage to cabinets. The complex also shows signs of roof damage. Marcos and Soralis feel frustrated by the delayed repairs in their rental. Moreover, they’re concerned about the crime within the public housing development, including recent break-ins, shootings, and prevalent drug usage. Their youngest son, Yemuel, faces mobility challenges due to Spasticity Toe and requires leg braces for walking. The layout of their rental, with all bedrooms on the second floor, exacerbates Yemuel’s difficulties. Despite actively seeking alternative housing, they struggle with affordability and accessibility issues. The family learned about the Habitat program through friends from work who were already participating. Soralis helpedbabysit their friends’ children while they fulfilled their Habitat partnership hours. Witnessing the home dedication of their friends’ Habitat home inspired Soralis to proceed with their own homeownership application. Spring 2024, Marcos and Soralis will participate in homebuyer educational classes alongside other future homeowners, covering essential topics such as financial wellness and home maintenance. Occasionally, they may require an interpreter for partnership activities, as English is their second language.

A Bright Future
Both Marcos and Soralis are employed at St. Joseph’s Senior Living, with Marcos working in maintenance and Soralis as a kitchen aide. Outside of work, they cherish spending quality time with their children, engaging in activities like fishing, playing board and video games, and visiting the park. Looking ahead to homeownership, they envision their own home as a haven of peace and tranquility.
