Family and Current Housing Tanjanica and her two sons have been living in a 2-bedroom rental for the past eight years. They moved to the townhouse after residing in a housing development known for its substandard conditions. While the rental has provided stability, the ever-increasing rent has become a significant financial burden, consuming 40% of Tanjanica’s gross income and leaving little for other necessities. As her boys grow older, the space is becoming insufficient for their needs. Before applying to Habitat for Humanity, Tanjanica feared she wouldn’t be able to find a decent, affordable home where her children could thrive. In spring 2024, Tanjanica successfully completed all the homebuyer education requirements. She attended mandatory classes on financial wellness and home maintenance, gaining essential knowledge for homeownership. Alongside other families in the program, she demonstrated her commitment by contributing sweat equity hours to help build homes for other Habitat partner families. This experience highlighted her resilience and proactive approach to improving her family’s circumstances.
A Bright Future The Smith family enjoys going to movies and having family dinners. They are very loving and caring towards each other and their extended family. Tanjanica describes her children with pride: Da’Shawn is very smart and athletic, while Ja’Marion is very funny and also loves sports. Tanjanica works as a nursing assistant at The Homestead at Gentlebrook, an assisted living and memory care facility. She believes that having their own home will have a significant positive impact on their lives, providing a stable and permanent place to call their own.

In Support of Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio
As a grassroots Christian housing ministry serving Stark, Carroll, Tuscarawas, Harrison, and Jefferson Counties, Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio is driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live. People partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering, or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability, and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves.
