Family and Current Housing
Karista is eager to provide a safe, stable home for her children. Throughout her adult life, she has moved frequently, struggling to find housing that’s both decent and affordable. When she had her first child, her stepfather offered her the chance to rent a home he owned. Though the house is old, she’s been grateful for the affordable rent. However, the home has significant issues. Broken windows are boarded up, doors don’t close properly, and drafts require her to use space heaters in winter. The kitchen has breaker problems, the roof shows signs of damage, and the basement has mice and potential mold. Unable to afford a home on the open market, Karista had planned to stay in the rental and save. But after her stepfather’s recent passing, the house must be sold, leaving her and her children at risk of losing their home. While looking for options, Karista discovered the Habitat East Central Ohio homeownership program. She applied, hoping to finally secure a permanent home. Since being accepted, she’s worked hard on sweat equity assignments and completed homebuyer education classes in fall 2024—gaining essential knowledge in financial wellness and home maintenance to prepare for this next chapter.
A Bright Future
Karista has worked as an aide at Heritage Villas for the past eight years. She and her children love being outdoors and spending time together. Her oldest son, Kaius, was recently diagnosed with autism, and she’s focused on creating a home environment that supports his sensory needs—he especially enjoys painting and art. Her youngest, Kaspian, is six months old, and though his personality is still emerging, one thing is clear—he loves to smile. More than anything, Karista wants a place to call her own, where she and her boys can thrive, feel secure, and build a future without the fear of having to move again. A place where affordability and comfort can finally go hand in hand.

In Support of Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio
As a grassroots Christian housing ministry serving Stark, Carroll, Tuscarawas, Harrison, and Jefferson Counties, Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio is driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live. People partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering, or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability, and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves.
