Family and Current Housing
Shardae grew up in the Canton area, living in low-income rentals. For the past five years, she and her children have lived in a private rental with serious issues: inoperable windows, water damage from an upstairs bathroom leaking into the kitchen, exposed electrical wires in several rooms, and a basement prone to flooding and mold. The kitchen breaker frequently trips, forcing the family to rely on power strips and extension cords, and the fire department once had to intervene due to a gas leak. Determined to break the cycle of housing instability, Shardae has worked tirelessly to improve her financial standing after being denied a conventional mortgage. Although she has made great progress, rising interest rates have made her dream of affordable homeownership unattainable. Learning about Habitat for Humanity’s homeownership program through friends and a former employer felt like an answered prayer, giving her renewed hope for stable, secure housing for her family. Shardae has fully embraced the program by completing sweat equity hours and attending homebuyer education classes on financial wellness, home maintenance, and more. These steps are equipping her with the skills and confidence to succeed as a homeowner.
A Bright Future
In 2024, while participating in the Habitat program, Shardae achieved a major milestone by completing nursing school and earning her Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) degree. She now works at Helping Hands Senior Care in North Canton and Aultman Hospital, balancing her career, Habitat commitments, and raising her four children. Her perseverance and hard work are setting an incredible example for her children, showing them the power of determination and hope. Sha’Rayia, her eldest, excels in school and basketball. Shamiya enjoys cheerleading and hairstyling, Terrian loves Marvel movies and drawing, and Shy’Ann shines in gymnastics. Shardae and her children are excited to build a permanent home—one that allows them to dream freely and thrive. Her hard work and determination are setting a new standard of living and creating a brighter, more secure future for her family
