Family and Current Housing
Ashley and her children have lived in subsidized housing in western Stark County for eight years. Though affordable, the apartment has serious issues—drafty windows, sloped floors, and a loose ceiling light. A past flood left water damage, and electrical problems led to a stove fire and frequent outlet failures. She was without a working stove for a long time. The environment is also unsafe. Drug use is common in the complex, and her family once saw someone using heroin on a community bench. All three children have asthma, and Ashley believes mold in the apartment has gone unaddressed. Space is a major issue, especially since one of her children is autistic and needs their own room. Ashley currently shares a room with one child, but larger rentals are unaffordable. She initially applied to the Habitat East Central Ohio program but was denied due to her debt-to-income ratio. Determined, she paid down debt, reapplied, and is now actively completing sweat equity and homebuyer education classes, which are preparing her for homeownership.

A Bright Future
Ashley works as a teacher’s assistant at Idea House Educational Services, a school for children with disabilities. The flexible schedule allows her to care for her family. She’s excited about finally owning a home. Her kids can’t wait to have their own rooms—Sophiya loves dancing and board games, Bray’den is a big Spider-Man fan, and Braxton loves dump trucks and being outside. Ashley is proud to be building a safe, stable future through Habitat—a place her children can truly call home.

As a grassroots Christian housing ministry serving Stark, Carroll, Tuscarawas, Harrison, and Jefferson Counties, Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio is driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live. People partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage.
