FAMILY AND CURRENT HOUSING
Future homeowner Alyssa Allison longs for the day she and her son can safely play outside in their very own yard. Alyssa lived with her mother for several years, but that rental became too overcrowded for her and her newborn son so Alyssa opted for her own place. Currently, Alyssa and two-year-old, Avant, rent a duplex only feet from busy highway 62 in Canton. The traffic in front of the duplex is so heavy after 4pm that Alyssa can’t enter or exit her driveway and she never allows Avant to play outside. In addition to its less-than-ideal location, the duplex has some structural issues and other unsafe conditions. When Alyssa’s employer, Synchrony Financial, invited their staff to volunteer on a Habitat worksite, Alyssa realized the Habitat homeownership program might be a perfect fit to provide the safe, stable home environment she dreamed of for her family.
A PERFECT FIT
Alyssa has not been involved in the program long but already she is proving her commitment to the process and doing what it takes to succeed. Along with hours spent on worksites and at ReStore, Alyssa will soon complete the House2Home education series where she will learn valuable skills regarding homeownership, maintenance, and personal and financial wellness. In addition to completing sweat equity hours, Alyssa works hard to provide for her family financially at her job at Synchrony Financial. She has been employed there since 2012 and loves working with customers to investigate claims and help resolve issues. Right now, Alyssa is balancing a lot between work, raising her son, and completing the weekly Habitat sweat equity requirements, but Alyssa knows she is making a short term sacrifice for a long term gain. When asked what difference she thinks Habitat will make, Alyssa responded, “the experience alone will make a huge difference and help me develop and grow as a person. I look forward to giving my son and myself a safe place to live and a place where Avant can enjoy playing outside.”

In Support of Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio
As a grassroots Christian housing ministry serving Stark, Carroll, Tuscarawas, Harrison, and Jefferson Counties, Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio is driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live. People partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering, or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability, and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves.
