Family and Current Housing

Arnita grew up in the Canton area, living in rental homes with her family. Today, she shares a two-bedroom, side-by-side multi-unit apartment with her son, Royal.

Unfortunately, the unit has several ongoing issues. The doors are not secure and allow air to leak in, and the windows do not open and close properly. The laundry area frequently floods and drains slowly, and the kitchen faucet leaks. There are also electrical concerns with the breakers, and clogged gutters often create additional problems around the property.

One of the most challenging aspects of their current living situation is the lack of safe outdoor space—there are no sidewalks or a yard where Royal can play. While Arnita feels they are outgrowing their apartment, finding an affordable alternative has been difficult.

She is currently on the waiting list for Section 8 housing, but chose to apply to Habitat for Humanity for the opportunity to become a homeowner.

Since joining Habitat, Arnita has shown a strong commitment to the program. She has faithfully completed her sweat equity hours in a variety of ways, including working at the Habitat ReStore, assisting in the Habitat workshop, and working on build sites alongside community volunteers. In spring 2025, she also successfully completed homebuyer education classes, gaining valuable skills in budgeting, financial planning, and home maintenance.

A Bright Future

Arnita has worked as a Customer Care Specialist at Progressive Commercial Insurance for the past three years. She enjoys spending quality time with Royal—sharing meals, cuddling on the couch, and watching their favorite movies together. Royal loves playing with Legos and watching the Ninja Turtles, while Arnita enjoys staying active and working on DIY projects.

Arnita looks forward to the day she can call a home her own. She dreams of planting a garden and creating a stable, affordable place for her son to grow. Becoming a homeowner will be one of her greatest accomplishments.
