Family and Current Housing
Appollonia, who affectionately goes by "Apple," was born and raised in Canton, Ohio. As an adult, she has moved between different types of public housing, often due to safety concerns. Eventually, she was referred by a colleague to a private rental, where she and her children currently live.
While the home initially seemed promising, the situation quickly became challenging. Over the past few years, her rent has increased significantly, now exceeding $1,200 per month for a two-bedroom home, creating significant financial strain. Due to limited space, Vada currently shares a room with Apple.
The home also has several maintenance issues, including air leaks around windows and doors, water leaks in both the bathroom and kitchen, and foundation concerns caused by nearby tree roots. Apple is also concerned about the possibility of lead paint in the home.
Most concerning, however, was a traumatic incident in which a man broke into the home in the middle of the night and was later found hiding in a closet. Since then, safety, security, and affordability have become Apple's highest priorities for her family.
Since joining Habitat, Apple has demonstrated a strong commitment to the program. She will complete her homebuyer education in Spring 2026 and in investing sweat equity hours alongside Habitat volunteers as she prepares to purchase her home through a 0% interest mortgage.
A Bright Future
Apple works as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital in same-day surgery. She finds her work fulfilling and feels called to care for others.
One of the things Apple is most looking forward to about her future Habitat home is the opportunity to welcome her adult daughter to live with her. Her daughter has experienced health challenges that have made independent living difficult, and this new home will provide the stability and support she needs.
Apple has worked hard her entire life to provide for her family. Through her partnership with Habitat, she's building on that foundation. The home she purchases will give her family what she's been working toward all along: a safe, stable place where they can live with comfort, security, and peace.
