Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio empowers partner families on their path to homeownership through sweat equity and educational classes. Community volunteers play a vital role as instructors, facilitators, and mentors, helping families gain the skills and knowledge for a successful transition to homeownership. Homebuyer education runs each spring and fall semester.
Instructor Training for First-Time Volunteers
In preparation for the fall semester, we're hosting an in-person training session for first-time education volunteers. The session will cover:
- An overview of the Habitat homebuyer program and education series
- What it means to serve as a mentor or instructor
- Time commitments
- Curriculum materials
- Q + A about the education volunteer experience
We're currently recruiting volunteers for the following classes:
Homeowner Maintenance Education (HOME): A hands-on course using life-size home maintenance modules to teach essential skills like drywall and siding repair, doors and basement mechanicals, and basic plumbing and electrical fixes. Families practice these skills under the guidance of trained volunteers and receive a detailed handbook with step-by-step instructions.
Financial Success: Families build financial literacy through group discussions and interactive activities covering budgeting, saving, debt management, credit, and their Habitat mortgage. Each participant is paired with a Money Mentor for one-on-one guidance through the course.
Attend the training even if you can't instruct this fall (you won't need to retake it later).
